Are there any household cures for the common hemorrhoid?

Are there any household cures for the common hemorrhoid? the itching is driving me up the wall, this is the worst feeling ever. i tried ointment but it doesn't seem to be helping, maybe because im wary to insert things up my rectum. in fact i'm not even sure if it really is a hemorrhoid but it does seem like it with the inflammation. no blood though.
