Why does my monitor not show anything?

I was building a new computer for my brother and when I hooked his old 40 GB hard drive to the motherboard nothing showed on the monitor except a black screen. The motherboard apparently had no on board graphics so a connected a separate graphics card to the agp slot. However it still does not show. Is this a drivers problem or something else?
